Why We Started the Reform ABQ Wellness Initiative

A Nurse-Led Mission to Close the Care Gap in Albuquerque

Access to healthcare in New Mexico is not equal — and for many families in Albuquerque, it’s almost nonexistent. Whether due to lack of insurance, high deductibles, or limited clinic availability, too many of our neighbors are left behind in the current system.

As a Native New Mexican and nurse practitioner, I’ve seen this reality firsthand — and I couldn’t stay silent.

That’s why I launched the Reform ABQ Wellness Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to breaking down the barriers to care and delivering compassionate, community-rooted wellness services to those who need it most.

What Makes Us Different?

We're not another big health organization. We’re nurse-led, faith-guided, and locally grounded. Our work is built on the belief that:

  • Wellness should be affordable and accessible.

  • Prevention matters more than emergency visits.

  • People deserve care that listens, educates, and empowers.

How We're Doing It

We currently offer four core programs designed to meet people where they are:

  1. Community DPC Access Program – We sponsor primary care memberships for uninsured and underinsured patients.

  2. Wellness Workshops – Free, educational events covering nutrition, fitness, hormone health, and more.

  3. Food & Health Resource Distribution – Quarterly kits with healthy food, hygiene supplies, and health info.

  4. Rural & Neighborhood Outreach Clinics – Pop-up clinics in areas where care is hard to reach.

Why This Matters Now

New Mexico ranks near the bottom for healthcare access and outcomes. But we believe hope begins with health — and health begins in the community.

We invite you to join us on this journey. Whether you’re a patient, volunteer, donor, or simply someone who cares, there’s a place for you here.

This blog will be a space for education, transparency, and storytelling. Expect posts that break down chronic conditions in plain language, share success stories from the community, and offer ways to get involved.

Because when we invest in wellness — we invest in the future of Albuquerque.
